Remote Access - Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)
What is a Virtual Private Network?
Here is a typical example. Lets say a medical practice has 2 (or more) offices. They would like to be able to share their data (could be medical records, files, printers, etc.) between all of their of offices.
Each office has a connection to the Internet. Years ago they could have had a private link setup between each office and then shared the data over this dedicated circuit. Expensive. Today they could instead create a Virtual Private Network (VPN) between their offices using the Internet. Not to worry, the VPN uses encryption, so any data sent between the offices using the VPN will not be able to be read or modified along the way.
VPN Gateway
Site to Site
We have solutions for the various ways that companies want to connect. When it comes to site to site communications, we have solutions that use the industry standard protocols like IPsec. Like our other solutions, our site-to-site VPNs are highly available, and have stateful failover. When a cluster configuration is used applications, network traffic, and users should not notice the transition from one node to another.
Mobile Users (Road Warriors)
We have solutions for roaming users that should fit everyones needs. There is the traditional VPN gateway setup, where users have software loaded on their laptops and establish a VPN (a IPsec tunnel) connection back to the main site. These can be problematic, for example when users are at hotels which often have their own firewalls and other network idiosyncrasies. Another option uses SSL, which can be easier for remote users to get working. A third option uses OpenSSH and a Remote Desktop Client. Each option has good points and bad. Some companies may choose to deploy and use all three methods, maintaining their security policy, while also enabling their users to work and be productive while away from of the office.
* - The maximum number of (connections, users, sessions) is limited by the hardware on which the system is deployed. There are no license restrictions.
